Backpacks and Packages Subject to Search on Subways
Friday July 22, 2005
According to the New York Times, searches of packages and backpacks on New York City subways have begun. Police officers are searching backpacks and packages at random in some of New York City's major subway stations, particularly during the busy a.m. and p.m. rush hours. Most searches will be conducted prior to entering the subway turnstile, and anyone objecting to the search is welcome to refuse and exit the subway system.
Despite the increased police presence and the additional searches, Mayor Bloomberg says, ""There are still no threats to this city that have been explicitly made to our subway or bus system. People should go ahead and feel comfortable using it."
