The play has a lot of humor: Osama bin Laden recites Vincent Price’s narration from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” There’s a pair of lisping incestuous twins. A man’s arm is cut off and tossed back at him. There’s even a burqa gag. It’s also full of New York City references: the M106 bus, Columbia University, the Citicorp Center, Chelsea Piers and the Film Forum, all of which visitors to New York City might be taking in during a visit.
1001 is playing at Baruch Performing Arts Center, inside the impressive Baruch College William and Anita Newman Vertical Campus. The address is 55 Lexington Ave, but the entrance is on E 25th St.
The show is running now through November 17, 2007.
Tips for seeing 1001:
- 1001 contains adult content (language, sexuality, violence) and is probably not suitable for children.
- Go to the bathroom before the show. Late entrance and readmission will not be permitted. The show is intimate and would be very interrupted by these kinds of entrances and exits.
- Strobe lights, sudden loud noises, and haze are part of the show. Be aware of that if any of those things would be a problem for you.
- Seating is general admission. As you enter the theater, the best seats will be the ones facing the same direction you are as you walk in. Second best seats are on the sides. Your last preference should be the section at the back, where just one scene will be very difficult to see.
