Guide Review - Broadway Review: Movin' Out
The familiarity of the music in "Movin' Out" was quite appealing, as the idea of ballet to a Billy Joel soundtrack felt unusual to me. Twyla Tharpe's "rock ballet" (if that genre exists) is unlike a typical musical, because the characters in the show weren't singing or even speaking--all sound came from the band. Both the choreography (which is so exhausting it requires two casts for days with two performances) and set design were imaginative and added much to the performance. The band, while not led by Billy Joel, did a good impersonation and was fun to listen to. The show moves quickly (running time under two hours) and the cast is full of energy. For a fan of modern dance and Billy Joel, this may be a true pleasure.
