Guide Review - Cellophane: Off-Broadway Theater
After a near accident on the swivel chair seating in this dimly lit basement theater, I wasn't sure where to focus. Waterfall artwork and the sound of chirping birds played by the DJ kept me distracted, until out of nowhere came our host introducing "Cellophane"...in song. Unfamiliar with the background of this production, when she started singing in "Bad English" I tried hard to understand what she was saying only to be disappointed. The familiar sounding dialog is misleading -- when you listen closely you will see that it is not...but is...but is not. Mac Wellman and Jim Simpson push the limits of language in this production. Though the language itself is difficult to understand, the message of political and social disapproval is clear.
