Stop 5: Fish

Fish on Bleecker and Cornelia Street

The last stop on our tour today is Fish. As a restaurant and raw bar, Fish is outstanding -- but the secret way to experience the quality of Fish without the expense is to buy the fish they use and cook it yourself.

Although the prices may not seem like bargains, they truly are for the quality of fish available here. Sushi quality tuna is almost always available for $14.99/pound. They also have Prince Edward Island mussels available, which cost under $3/pound. The selection varies depending on season and what's available, but I've seen everything from salmon and swordfish to soft-shell crabs and squid available for sale.

Be sure to ask them to pack your fish on ice for you, they're happy to do it. You may even find some inspiration for dinner by checking out their blackboard menu while you wait for them to bag your fish.

Even if you're not in a fully equiped kitchen environment, you can pick up some clams or oysters and treat yourself to the wonders of their raw bar, at about half the price. A dozen little neck clams costs $6.00, at the raw bar or in the restaurant, they are $1.00 a piece.
