Originally produced at the St. James Theater in December 1958, the Flower Drum Song score was composed by Rodgers and Hammerstein and the story was based on a novel by C. Y. Lee. This love story takes place in San Francisco's Chinatown and the story examines the conflicts of Western and Eastern traditions, as well as between older and younger generations, in the late 1950s. With a new book by David Henry Hwang, Flower Drum Song is scheduled to begin previews on September 23, 2002. Many changes have been made to the original musical to make it more appealing to modern audiences. These changes include re-introducing a song that was cut from the original score and making the central character a refugee from Communist China (as opposed to a woman brought to the U.S. as a bride.) The world premier of Flower Drum Song took place in October 2001 at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and was met with rave reviews.
