Throughout all five boroughs of Manhattan, September 11th, 2001 will be memorialized on September 11th, 2002.

  • Early am
    5 bagpipe & drum processionals will march to Ground Zero from points in each of the five boroughs
    The processionals will be led by the pipe and drum corps of five governmental agencies that performed heroically on 9/11 and in its aftermath: FDNY, Port Authority NY & NJ, NYPD, City Corrections and Sanitation Departments. They will converge at Ground Zero just after 8 a.m.

    Moment when first plane struck; citywide moment of silence
    "Let Freedom Ring"

    NYC’s Official Memorial Service at Ground Zero
    Governor George E. Pataki to read "The Gettysburg Address."
    Former Mayor Rudolph W. Guiliani to begin recitating victims' names.
    Taps is played
    Gov. James E. McGreevey of New Jersey reads excerpt from the Declaration of Independence.
  • 10:29 a.m.
    Moment second collapse occurred, memorial concludes.
    "Let Freedom Ring"

    President Bush to visit Ground Zero
  • All Day
    Families descend ramp and walk around trade center site.
    Roses are collected to be preserved for permanent memorial
    Barnstorm XV: New York City: One Year Later
    100 photo students + 250 editors & photographers will be taking photos for a book, "NYC: One Year Later."
  • Sunset
    Mayor Bloomberg recites FDR’s "Four Freedoms"
    Sunset Observance in Battery Park, with heads of state from around the world. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg reads Franklin D. Roosevelt’s "Four Freedoms." An eternal flame is lit.
  • Evening
    Candlelight vigils and musical performances beginning with the lighting of an eternal flame at the "Sphere" temporary memorial in Battery Park, at twilight
    Bronx:
    Van Cortlant Park, Parade Grounds Enter at Broadway and 246th Street
    Program features Bronx Arts Ensemble and Highbridge Voices
    Brooklyn:
    Prospect Park, Bandshell Enter at Prospect Park West and 9th Street
    Program features the Brooklyn Philharmonic and Brooklyn Youth Chorus
    Manhattan:
    Central Park, Great Lawn Enter the Park on the West Side at 81st Street or 85th Street and Central Park West; on the East Side at 79th or 84th street
    Program features Orchestra of St. Luke's and Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra
    Queens:
    Flushing Meadows, Unisphere Promenade
    Program features Queens Symphony Orchestra and Louis Armstrong Legacy Band
    Staten Island:
    Snug Harbor Cultural Center, South Meadow 100 Richmond Terrace
    Program features Staten Island Symphony and Curtis High School Jazz Ensemble and Curtis Guitar Ensemble
