New Year's Day Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Ceremony Guide Traditionally, Chinese families set off firecrackers to ward off demons at the beginning of the New Year. Today, these celebrations are more symbolic, but important nonetheless. In New York City, it's illegal for individuals to set off fireworks, so several cultural organizations in Chinatown have organized a New Year's Day Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Ceremony to continue the tradition.
