The events of September 11, 2001 have left a permanent mark on New York City. From memorial services and museum exhibits to fundraisers and flag displays, there are many events planned around New York City to honor and remember those who perished on September 11th.
1. Memorial Ceremony at the World Trade Center Site
The 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will take place at Ground Zero on September 11, 2011. Only family members of victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks will be able to participate in the ceremony, though there will certainly be many people watching from a distance.
2. Tribute in Light
The Tribute in Light will return on September 11, 2011. Presented by the Municipal Arts Society, the Tribute in Lights will be illuminated from dusk on September 11 until dawn the next day.
3. September 11 Exhibit at PS1
PS1 has organized an exhibit to commemorate the tenth anniversary of September 11th which will run from September 11, 2011–January 9, 2012. The exhibit explores how the events of 9/11 have changed our view of the world. Most of the 70 works of art included in the exhibit were made before 9/11, including a Diane Arbus photo of a newspaper blowing across a New York intersection at night from the late 1950s and a series of pictures of the World Financial Center by John Pilson taken in the late 1990s.

4. Remembering 9/11 Exhibit at the New-York Historical Society Museum & Library
Remembering 9/11 will features work by both professional and amateur photographers; letters written to police officers and firefighters; objects that were part of the many "shrines" set up around New York City, and drawings of the National September 11 Memorial. Admission to the exhibit, which will run from September 8, 2011 - April 1, 2012, will be free to the public.

5. Remember to Love at Trinity Church, Wall Street
Trinity Church has planned a week-long series of events with a focus on reconciliation and peace. Daily Prayers for Peace, concerts, discussions and more offer the public an opportunity to remember and reflect on the events of 9/11.
6. NYC 9/11 Memorial Field in Battery Park
Three thousand Flags of Honor will be displayed in Battery Park from September 8-12, 2011. The Flags of Honor feature the names of the nearly 3,000 victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
7. Hands Across Lower Manhattan
Organized by Community Board 1, "Hands Across Lower Manhattan" is an inclusive event, where participants will join hands and create a human chain along Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. This event has been organized by CB1 in order to offer an event that is open to everyone.
8. Rethinking Memorial: Ten Interactive Sites for Remembering 9/11
On September 10, 2011 from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., you can visit ten artist-created interactive 9/11 memorials at outdoor locations in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The event is coordinated by the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC), The Dumbo Improvement District and Illegal Art with support from Two Trees Management Company.
9. The Tenth Anniversary of 9/11: Remembrance, Hope & Renewal
St. Bart's, an Episcopal church located on Park Avenue, will host a day of events, music, and services on September 11, 2011. There is a particular focus on honoring the local midtown firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11, but all are welcome and encouraged to participate in the day's events.
10. FDNY 10th Anniversary Memorial Service
The FDNY will hold its memorial service on Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 2-4 p.m. at St. Patrick's Cathedral to honor the 343 FDNY members lost on September 11, 2001. Seating inside the Cathedral is reserved for the families of those firefighters lost on 9/11, but some seating and standing room a the rear of the Cathedral will be available for uniformed Fire and EMS workers. The ceremony will be telecast on large monitors on 50th and 51st Streets between 5th & Madison Avenues.
