New York City Sales Tax for Shoppers

Shoppers in New York City should know that most prices don't include sales tax. Purchases made in New York City are subject to both New York City (4.5%) and New York State (4.375%) sales tax. Combined, most purchases are subject to a 8.875% sales tax.

Items excluded from sales tax:

• Clothing & shoes under $55
• Clothing & shoes under $110 are exempt from NYC tax (but still subject to 4.375% NY State tax)
• food items purchased at grocery stores (though prepared foods are taxed)
• prescription drugs

The New York State tax on clothing from $55-110 is scheduled to end on April 1, 2012.
